ADR glossary

Impasse

A point in mediation where parties cannot reach agreement on terms despite facilitated negotiation, sometimes leading to adjournment or another ADR step.

General information only, not legal advice, mediation advice, or a substitute for professional judgment. Neutly is administrative software for mediator practices; it does not host live video or select court neutrals. Mediators and lawyers remain responsible for their work.

Impasse is not always failure; mediators may pause for further disclosure, expert input, or lawyer instructions. Documenting what was explored helps if parties return later.

Administrative systems support impasse indirectly by preserving matter history, session notes staff policies allow, and open tasks for follow-up bookings or fee settlement.
